BARNSTABLE — The Barnstable Conservation Commission voted 7-0 to approve a concrete weir and fish ladder at the Long Pond outlet on the Centerville River. Senior Project Manager Amber Unruh and Epsilon Associates scientist Nicole Perlott presented the design, which replaces a failing sandbag system and requires a state fishway construction permit before construction, tentatively set for June 30 through August 31, 2027. Commissioner Bill Hearn questioned the project's value amid drought conditions, noting the application itself says flow "is restricted by sediment due to shoaling and erosion." Resident Jane Ward said the area is in "a year two of a level two drought," with volunteer counts of 5,000 to 10,000 herring in recent years.
Engineer Kurt Orbis cited a Maine project that grew from 10,000 to a million fish within three or four years. Commissioners added a three-year fish-count monitoring requirement before approving.
