Board of Health · Meeting of October 27, 2026

BARNSTABLE — The Barnstable Board of Health voted 6-0 to condemn a Hyannis Road house illegally divided into five unpermitted units where at least seven children under four had been living. Deputy Director Jeff Carter said the Building Division first flagged unpermitted work in January 2023 and eventually used a Southeast Housing Court warrant to inspect the property after a September 9 fire department call exposed inadequate egress and no fire protection. Town counsel Jen said the home "has been made into five separate dwelling units, each with its own kitchen and cooking facilities," meeting the Sanitary Code's unfit-for-habitation standard.

The board also approved two septic variances, one 5-1 with Dr. Caniff dissenting, approved a two-lot subdivision on Preston Hill Lane, granted a six-month hepatitis B vaccination variance to a pregnant body art practitioner, and heard pushback from mobile sauna operator Carl Mackey on draft regulations he said would bar wood-fired saunas from operating at town beaches.
