Craigville Beach's lifeguards worked their final shifts of the season over Labor Day weekend, and the town has adjusted pickleball hours at Marstons Mills after noise complaints.

BARNSTABLE -- Town Manager Mark Ells detailed both items in a September 3 update to the Town Council covering late August into early September.

TOWN -- Ells said the town kept lifeguards on duty at Craigville Beach through Saturday, Sunday and Monday of the holiday weekend, the last lifeguard coverage of the season; gate staff will continue at the town's other beach facilities, but Craigville was the only location with lifeguards that weekend. As of Labor Day Monday, the town's beach lifeguard season is over.

Ells also said the Recreation Department, coordinating with the schools, has put up new signage, added noise mitigation and adjusted rules and operating hours at the pickleball courts at Marstons Mills in response to concerns raised about the sport's popularity. Beginning September 2 and running through the end of the school year, hours at the Marstons Mills facility are Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Ells said the town is also looking at other locations where pickleball is played to address concerns while continuing to allow the activity.
