Barnstable School Committee approved a fiscal year 2028 capital plan and learned that roof-repair estimates for Barnstable High School and Barnstable Intermediate School hit $19.8 million and $4.24 million. Superintendent Sara Ahern said the state will reimburse 55 percent of each project, with local funding due by March 9, 2027. Members also voted unanimously to add a full-time special education teacher at Barnstable Community Innovation School after its inclusion caseload jumped from four students to 28 in just over a year.
The committee appointed Elizabeth Lozada as nurse at Barnstable United Elementary School, raised before- and after-care staff pay by $1 to $2 an hour, and adopted a new state-required equal-access policy. A clash over Robert's Rules between member Andre King and Chair Kathy Bent briefly forced a recess, with member Jennifer Cullum saying, "I haven't got time to waste an hour arguing over this crap."
